City closing Gardiner Expressway, affecting GO bus service, October 12, 13 and 14



From 11:59 p.m. Friday, October 11 until 5 a.m. Monday, October 14, the City of Toronto is closing:

  • the Frederick G. Gardiner Expressway between Highway 427 and Carlaw Avenue

for the annual fall maintenance program.

This weekend, crews are also setting up new work zones for a longer-term construction project that starts Monday.

GO Transit is detouring buses along these routes, while the expressway is closed:

Although the maintenance project does not directly affect TTC services, closing the expressway likely results in major congestion along nearby and parallel streets, as motorists seek alternate routes. Passengers aboard buses and streetcars along these streets can expect delays:

While the expressway is closed, City crews are:

  • marking lines;
  • inspecting overhead and ground signs;
  • repairing potholes;
  • sealing cracks;
  • sweeping and removing debris;
  • removing graffiti;
  • flushing catch basins;
  • inspecting and chipping bridges;
  • flushing bridge joints;
  • inspecting, repairing and replacing crash-attenuation systems that help cushion and redirect vehicles from barricades and barriers;
  • repairing and relamping of street lights;
  • replacing and repairing hydro poles;
  • inspecting and repairing traffic camera; and
  • repairing and replacing guardrails.

From 7:30 a.m. until 11:30 p.m. Saturday, October 12 and Sunday, October 13, all buses start and end their trips in Port Credit GO Station bus terminal. GO is only offering train service, not bus service, between Union Station and Port Credit.

Eastbound buses operate along their regular route to Highway 427 and the Queen Elizabeth Way / Frederick G. Gardiner Expressway, then proceed:

westward along the Queen Elizabeth Way;
southward along Hurontario;
westward along Park Street East;
northward along Elizabeth Street; and then
westward along Queen Street East to Port Credit GO Station,
ending their trips.

Westbound buses start their trips in Port Credit GO Station bus terminal, then proceed:

westward along Queen East;
southward along Elizabeth Street;
eastward along Park East;
northward along Hurontario; and then
eastward along the Queen Elizabeth Way to Highway 427,
resuming their regular route northward along Highway 427.

16 Hamilton / Toronto express
