TTC Operating Hours Definitions

Normal Hours (7 days a week, 18 hours a day

Today, taken as whenever the subway is open and operational. Typically 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. (the next morning) Mondays through Saturdays and most holidays, and 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. (the next morning) on Sundays.

Daytime Hours

On weekdays, a combination of rush hours and midday service, typically 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. On Saturdays, typically 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. On Sundays, typically 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Early Evening Hours

Typically 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Evening Hours

A combination of early evening and late evening hours

Holiday Service

Service during statutory holidays. On most days, service levels are as if on Sundays, but the subway and most routes start service at 6 a.m. The exception is on Christmas and New Year’s Day when standard Sunday service is operated.

Late Evening Hours

Typically 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Service may end around midnight or 1 a.m.

Midday Service

Weekday service between the rush hours, typically 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Night or “Owl” Service

Overnight service, typically starting whenever the subway closes and ending when the subway opens. On most mornings, this is from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. On Sunday and certain holiday mornings, this ends at 9 a.m.

Rush Hour Service

Today, typically Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and from 2:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. As late as the early 1950s, however, rush hour included Saturday morning service from 6 a.m. until noon, but this was eliminated as the work week was shorted to five days and forty hours.
