Metrolinx continues to upgrade the Stouffville rail corridor, including building a vehicle underpass and pedestrian bridge on Steeles Avenue East just north of Milliken GO Station, as part of the GO Expansion Program.

Starting 8 p.m., Friday, April 30, the City of Toronto is closing

  • Steeles Avenue East between Redlea Avenue and Silver Star Boulevard / Old Kennedy Road

to accommodate contractors building the underpass.

The TTC is detouring buses along these routes, while the street is closed:

  • 43 Kennedy;
  • 53 Steeles East;
  • 57 Midland;
  • 343 Kennedy overnight;
  • 353 Steeles East overnight.

Contractors will maintain one traffic lane in each direction on Steeles between Kennedy Road and Redlea to provide access to businesses south of Steeles East on Redlea.

This phase of construction on Steeles Avenue East and the resulting TTC detours continue until May 3.

During this closure, crews are working “around the clock” to

  • connect the new roadway with the old roadway;
  • finish paving;
  • build curbs;
  • finish painting lines; and
  • install temporary construction barriers to divert traffic during the next phase of construction.

Starting 6 a.m., Monday, May 3, the City reopens Steeles East, but diverts traffic to the south side of the new underpass below the rail bridge.

During this next phase of construction, two lanes of traffic in each direction flow on the south side of the underpass, while construction continues on the north side. The pedestrian walkway will be available on the south side of Steeles Avenue East beside the new retaining wall. This next phase of construction continues “through to mid-2022”, meaning as late as until June 30, 2022.
