Metrolinx construction at Rutherford GO Station continues, YRT detouring buses

Metrolinx and its contractors continue a long-term project project to transform Rutherford GO Station by 2022.

Contractors are also building a grade separation — a bridge to carry GO Transit’s Barrie-line tracks over Rutherford Road. This means that motorists will no longer have to wait for a train to pass - improving the safety of everyone near the station. The work zone for the bridge project may change the way you access Rutherford GO Station.

Starting Thursday, June 26, GO is closing about 130 parking spaces in the main parking lot closer to Westburne Drive. You will still have access to parking spaces closer to the station building.

Starting Monday, June 29, the City of Vaughan is closing a section of Westburne Drive to accommodate construction.

York Region Transit is detouring buses along this route, while the street is closed:

Motorists still have access to the station and parking on Westburne Drive by turning off Rutherford Road. A temporary station entrance / exit is available just north of the road closure. The City and Metrolinx may also adjust walkways on Westburne Drive during construction. Look for signs to guide you to and from the station.

Starting Monday, June 29, GO is closing the north half of the platform for construction of a second track and platform. This temporarily changes how you get on trains until contractors finish this phase of the project “in late 2020” or until about December 31. You may have to adjust where you normally board your train. The doors of some coaches will not open from outside of the train. Spread out along the platform and keep the accessibility coach available for those who need it most.

Metrolinx has already installed a pedestrian tunnel under the track. Eventually, the tunnel will connect you to the second platform and track that contractors are building as part of this project.

Once contractors have finished the project, Rutherford GO Station will include:

  • A new second track and platform to accommodate more frequent Barrie line service in both directions;
  • better platforms with canopies to connect to the new parking garage;
  • new elevators on both platforms to connect to the pedestrian tunnel;
  • the new parking structure with 1,200 more spaces
  • a new railway bridge over Rutherford Road to enhance safety and enable 15-minute two-way electrified GO service in the future;
  • better pedestrian and cyclist connectivity, including a pedestrian bridge over Rutherford Road, and bike lanes on Rutherford Road;
  • 100 new bike parking spots;
  • a better bus loop for better connections to York Region Transit and the passenger drop-off and pick-up area or “Kiss ‘n’ Ride”;
  • a better station building.


Metrolinx is also working with the City of Vaughan to improve access into and out of the station, which has become challenging as ridership has grown over the last few years.

Metrolinx expects to open the new parking spots and the grade separation in 2022.

Improving Rutherford GO Station is just one phase of the larger project to introduce frequent, all-day, two-way service along the GO’s Barrie line by 2025.

From Monday, June 29 until Thursday, July 9, southbound buses operate along their regular route to Rutherford Road and Westburne Drive, then detour:

westward along Rutherford;
southward along Keele Street;
eastward along Gantner Gate; and then
south- and eastward along Jacob Keffer Parkway to Basaltic Road,
resuming their regular route southward along Basaltic.

Southbound buses skip their regular stops

  • on Westburne Drive south of Rutherford Road and at Moyal Court and
  • on Basaltic Road north of Jacob Keffer Parkway.

Instead, southbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at a temporary stop

  • on Rutherford Road at Barrhill Road.

Northbound buses operate along their regular route to Basaltic Road and Jacob Keffer Parkway, then detour:

west- and northward along Jacob Keffer; and then
eastward along Rutherford Road to Westburne Drive,
resuming their regular route eastward along Rutherford.

Northbound buses skip their regular stops

  • on Basaltic Road across from Jacob Keffer Parkway, south of Moyal Court and across from Moyal Court and
  • on Westburne Drive beside Rutherford GO Station parking and at Rutherford Road.

Instead, northbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at temporary stops

  • on Jacob Keffer Parkway west of Basaltic Road and
  • on Rutherford Road at Westburne Drive.

Other changes during construction

For transit passengers

  • Metrolinx has removed one of two bus shelters on the north side of the bus loop.
  • It’s also reshaped the Kiss and Ride. It’s closed the two south lanes and extended the lanes to the west.
  • York Region Transit has removed its bus stop on the north side of Rutherford Road for buses along the 85 / 85C Rutherford and 87 Autumn Hills routes. You can board these buses one block east at Barhill Road.

For pedestrians

  • York Region / the City of Vaughan have removed the crosswalk at the bus loop entrance until the grade separation is complete. You can safely cross Rutherford Road at Barhill Road / Westburne Drive or at Peter Rupert Avenue / Confederation Parkway.
  • As part of this work, Metrolinx has also blocked off an area north of Rutherford Road across from the station and access to the path from Rutherford Road to Lauderdale Drive at Rutherford. If you walk to the GO from north-east of the station, you can use Peter Rupert Avenue to access Rutherford Road instead of this path.

For cyclists

  • Metrolinx has relocated the bike racks to the west side of the station building, close to the Kiss and Ride.

For motorists

  • A temporary roadway detours traffic on Rutherford Rd between Barhill Road / Westburne Drive and Peter Rupert Avenue / Confederation Parkway. This four-lane detour road will be in place until the new railway overpass bridge over Rutherford Rd is complete in spring 2022.

  • Metrolinx has:

  • closed a large section of the south side of the main parking lot to accommodate construction of the new parking structure.
  • opened a new temporary parking lot south of the station beside #635 Westburne Road.
  • closed the south entrance to the station from Westburne Drive. Use the north entrance from Westburne Drive to access the main parking lot.
  • closed 14 parking spaces on the north side of the main parking lot.
  • opened four more general parking spaces in the main lot.
  • relocated the eight carpool parking spaces in the regular lot to the temporary parking lot.
  • relocated all reserved parking spaces to the temporary lot.
  • relocated motorcycle and scooter parking to the temporary lot.
  • relocated accessible parking spaces to the two lanes west of the Kiss and Ride.
  • All carpool spaces in the regular parking lot are open for general parking.
