224 Victoria Park North (2002-2016)

Coincident with the opening of the SHEPPARD SUBWAY, service is established on a new route providing service between the Victoria Park/Woodbine industrial area north of Steeles Avenue and the SHEPPARD SUBWAY at Don Mills. It replaces the 24C and 24D branches of the 24 VICTORIA PARK bus. The route is operated by Malvern Division.

Buses operate from Don Mills station via east on Sheppard and north on Victoria Park past Steeles to Steelcase Road. Buses on the rush hour 224C branch loop via west and north on Steelcase, north on Woodbine, east on Riviera, north on Rodick, east on 14th Avenue, south on Hood Road, west on Denison Road, south on Esna Park and west on Steelcase to Victoria Park, returning via south on Victoria Park and west on Sheppard to Don Mills station. Buses on the 224D branch continue via north on Victoria Park, west on Denison and north on Woodbine Avenue to Lanark. During mornings, northbound 224D buses operate via west on Lanark, south on Frontenac, west, north and east on Cochrane, north on Fronenac, west on Centurion, north on Allstate Parkway, east on Valleywood, north on Renfrew and east on Hooper to Woodbine while southbound buses operate on Woodbine only. In the afternoons, northbound buses operate via Woodbine only while southbound buses operate via Hooper, Renfrew, Valleywood, Allstate, East Valhalla, Cochrane and Lanark. From Hooper, buses continue along Woodbine to Major Mackenzie Road, looping via west, north and east on Hillmount, north on Markland and east on Major Mackenzie to Woodbine, returning via south on Woodbine.

Service on the 224C branch operates rush hours only, while 224D operates 7 days a week, during the day and during the early evening. Service frequencies are every 30 to 40 minutes during off-peak times and, when combined with the 224C during rush hour, every 15 minutes.

At the request of York Region Transit, all weekend and holiday service north of Steeles is eliminated. York Region Transit provides service north of Steeles Avenue, duplicating the 224D route, on a YRT route numbered 224B. York Region Transit buses are used. Service south of Steeles is replaced by a new 224 “Steeles” branch, looping at the off-street loop at Victoria and Steeles and operating from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends and holidays.

September 7, 2004

Effective on this day, all off-peak service on 224 VICTORIA PARK is eliminated. Buses continue to operate on the 224C and 224D routes during rush hours, but service on the 224 “Steeles” branch is eliminated, replaced by additional service on 24 VICTORIA PARK. In addition, Monday to Friday midday and evening 224D service north of Steeles Avenue is replaced by the 24D “Major Mackenzie” branch of 24 VICTORIA PARK.

At Don Mills station, buses on the 224 VICTORIA PARK NORTH route are shifted from Bay 9 to Bay 8, occupying the space vacated by the cancelled 268 WARDEN NORTH route.

At the request of York Region Transit, service is extended north to serve the East Cathedral area north of Major Mackenzie Drive. Buses on this branch follow their normal route to Woodbine and Hillmount then, during the morning rush hours, northbound buses loop via west, north and east on Hillmount, north on Markland, east on Major Mackenzie past Woodbine, north on Hazelton Avenue, west on Stoney Hill Boulevard and south on Woodbine, past Major Mackenzie to route. During the afternoon rush hours, northbound buses operate north on Woodbine to Major Mackenzie and then loop via east on Major Mackenzie, north on Hazelton, west on Stoney Hill, south on Woodbine, west on Major Mackenzie, south on Markland and west, south and east on Hillmount to Woodbine. This extension is matched by the YRT’s 224B buses. Initially, YRT renumbered this branch as “15 Woodbine”, but soon reverted to “224B Woodbine”

The 224D loop at Major Mackenzie is expanded to the north and buses now loop north on Woodbine, east on Stony Hill, south on Hazelton and west on Major Mackenzie.

November 23, 2008

Service is moved from Malvern Division to Eglinton Division.

February 15, 2009

This TTC route is now an accessible service using Orion VII Low Floor buses. The 224B service operated by York Region Transit is not fully accessible.

May 25, 2009

Buses on this route are now bike racked equipped.

May 10, 2010

At the request of York Region Transit, service on 224D is extended north to Elgin Mills and the newly opened Honda Canada plant. Northbound buses operate along their old route to Major Mackenzie Drive East and Woodbine and then proceed east along Major Mackenzie East, north along Hazelton Avenue, west along Stony Hill Boulevard, north along Woodbine Avenue, west along Elgin Mills Road East, north along Woodbine Avenue Bypass and Honda Boulevard to the Honda Canada offices, Southbound buses reverse this route.

Service is rendered fully accessible with the use of low floor buses by York Region Transit.

June 30, 2013

On this date, service on YRT’s 224B is modified to operate along Woodbine in both directions, with service west of Woodbine, between Lanark and Hopper discontinued. Service on the TTC’s 224D is unmodified.

June 17, 2016

Last day of service. On Sunday, June 19, York Region Transit combines this operation, along with the 24D VICTORIA PARK branch with the new YRT 24 WOODBINE route, operating seven days a week between Honda Boulevard and Don Mills station.
