The history of TTC bus service on Markham Road begins on September 5, 1961 when service started on a branch of the 86 SCARBORO bus. On this day, the 86E branch began, operating from the Churchill Heights area between Lawrence and Ellesmere south to Kingston Road and southwest to Bingham loop. On May 11, 1968, service was diverted along St. Clair Avenue to Warden station on the BLOOR-DANFORTH subway line, and extended north to Progress Avenue. This continued until October 16, 1976, when the branch was broken off and given its own route number.

October 17 1976

Service begins on the new 102 MARKHAM ROAD route, operating from Warden station on the BLOOR-DANFORTH subway, replacing the 86E branch of the 86 SCARBORO bus. Buses run from Bay 7 at Warden station via east on St. Clair, northeast on Kingston Road and north on Markham Road to Finch Avenue, looping clockwise in an off-street loop at the northeast corner. Buses return south via the reverse route. This service operates Monday through Friday during rush hours and midday. At other times, buses operate only as far as Progress Avenue, looping clockwise via Estate Drive and then east on Progress to Markham. Additional rush hour service is provided via this branch as well.

This route is based out of Birchmount Garage.

October 11, 2015

Service is expanded during off-peak times so that, outside of the afternoon rush hour, service between Warden station and McNicol operates at intervals of ten minutes or better, whenever the subway is opening. Additional service required for the afternoon rush hour to render this portion of the route part of the Ten Minute Network is delayed until 2016 when sufficient peak buses are available.

January 3, 2016

Service is revised at the north end, through Tapscott Employment District. Service on the 102B (McNicoll) branch is replaced by a branch operating along Markham Road to Steeles Avenue, looping via east on Steeles, south on Tapscott and west on Select Avenue to Markham Road, returning south on Markham Road. This service operates seven days a week whenever the subway is open, albeit southbound only during the morning rush hour and northbound only during the afternoon rush hour.

During rush hours, service on the old 102C (Passmore) branch is revised to also operate to Steeles, but during the morning rush hour, northbound buses divert via west on Nashdene Road, north on Dynamic Drive and east on Passmore Road before turning north on Markham Road to Steeles, looping via east on Steeles, south on Tapscott and west on Select to Markham Road. During the afternoons, southbound 102C buses start at Steeles, loop via Steeles, Tapscott and Select, head south on Markham Road and then divert via west on Passmore Road, south on Dynamic Drive and east on McNicoll Avenue to Markham Road before heading south.

Service through the Tapscott Employment District is now provided by an extension of the 42 CUMMER bus.
