Dundas West / Sterling track-replacement, starting October 28: TTC detours continue

Update — Monday, November 2, 12:53 p.m.: Construction at Dundas West / Sterling ended early — the evening of Sunday, November 1. Dundas Street West remains closed east of Sterling Rd for ongoing TTC track work. Crews continue rebuilding the road and sidewalks on St. Helens and Lumbervale Avenues.

Starting 5 a.m. Wednesday, October 28, the City of Toronto is closing

  • Dundas Street West between west of Sterling Road and west of College Street.

to accommodate a City / TTC project to replace the streetcar tracks.

The project follows earlier, nearby projects to replace the tracks

Construction at the intersection of Dundas West / Sterling continues until November 2. Track construction on the bridge over the Metrolinx / GO Transit tracks east of Sterling Road continues “until late December” or until December 31.

However, starting Monday, November 16, the City and TTC start a third track-replacement project in the area at

  • the intersection of Dundas Street West with College Street.

The TTC continues to detour streetcars and buses along their current paths at least until November 10, when it revises detour routings to accommodate crews who are delivering and storing rails on parts of Dundas West for the upcoming work at College.

During this project, the City is prohibiting through traffic and on-street parking on Dundas Street West between Sterling Road and Lansdowne Avenue.

Crews work in the track area all day, every day. They’ll excavate, break concrete and complete other noisy activities only from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m. daily. The TTC says that concrete-breaking… is the most disruptive and typically lasts the first two days for each phase of the construction.

According to the TTC, “The rail installation phase of this project requires periods of around-the-clock work by TTC to preserve the integrity and quality of new rail and concrete, and to support the daytime work. Overnight rail work by TTC may consist of moving new rail into position, rail installation and rail welding / grinding.”

From 11:30 p.m. Sunday, October 25 until 6 a.m. Monday, October 26, crews relocated strings of rail from Howard Park Avenue just west of Dundas to an area on Dundas just east of Sorauren Avenue to supply this project.

In related projects, starting Monday, October 26, the City is also improving intersection and sidewalks, installing cycling infrastructure and rebuilding the roadways on:

  • Lumbervale Avenue between St. Helens and Lansdowne Avenues; and
  • St. Helens Avenue between Lumbervale Avenue and College Street.
