Wellesley Station "Easier Access" project: TTC detour September 13

Update — Wednesday, July 22, 2020, 7:25 a.m.: Construction has ended and the TTC has opened the elevators today.

The TTC is continuing its “Easier Access” program to install elevators in its subway stations, making the subway system accessible for everyone. The program supports the Government of Ontario’s Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act. The provincial legislation commits the TTC to achieving a barrier-free transit system by 2025.

The TTC started construction Tuesday, April 1, 2018 to make Wellesley Station accessible by late 2020. It closed the bus loop until June this year. However, elevator construction continues in the station.

Shortly after bus service ends Friday, September 13, TTC contractors are pouring concrete in the bus loop for the elevator project. The bus loop remains closed until 9 a.m. The concrete trucks enter from the east roadway.

The TTC is detouring buses along this route, while the loop is closed:

Buses drop off or pick up passengers on the street, instead of in the bus loop.

The project includes:

  • two new elevators to access south- and northbound platforms;
  • better signs for wayfinding; and
  • security cameras along the accessible path.

The TTC completed infrastructure for two more exits / entrances to and from the station in fall 2016. The exits — in condominium developments at 17 Dundonald Street and 587 Yonge Streets — will open when construction of the developments is complete.
