Tomorrow, Monday, May 29, City of Toronto contractors are start a project (.pdf) to upgrade the bridge that carries Eglinton Avenue across Etobicoke Creek at the very western limits of the city.

(West of the bridge, Eglinton extends entirely into the City of Mississauga, which calls this part of Eglinton, “Eglinton Avenue East”. East of the bridge, the north side of Eglinton is also part of Mississauga, while the south side of the street lies in the City of Toronto, which calls it “Eglinton Avenue West”. Confused yet?)

The City of Toronto project follows earlier work by the City of Mississauga to improve the bridge as part of the Mississauga Transitway project — the transitway parallels Eglinton at this point, just north of the street.

To avoid delaying buses while crews work on the project, MiWay is detouring buses operating along these MiLocal routes:

  • 7 Airport;
  • 35 / 35A Eglinton; and
  • 87 Meadowvale - Skymark.

During this project, City contractors are:

  • repairing and refurbishing all components of the bridge structure at road level and below, but not the transitway portion;
  • rebuilding the south sidewalk;
  • removing and replacing the concrete path under the bridge;
  • removing and replacing the slope paving under the bridge;
  • waterproofing the bridge deck and resurfacing the roadway;
  • realigning Etobicoke Creek to flow through a straighter course under the bridge and reduce erosion around the bridge and upstream; and
  • restoring all areas by planting shrubs and trees in the creek valley.

(Updated — Tuesday, November 29, 7:12 p.m.) Construction on the Eglinton bridge over Etobicoke Creek and the MiWay detours continue until November 30 December 17.
