James Street North construction:
HSR detours, August 11 to October 29

Update — Thursday, October 30, 5:05 p.m.: Construction and detours continue until further notice.

The City of Hamilton is closing:

  • James Street North between Strachan and Barton Streets

starting today, Monday, August 11 during a project to rebuild the roads and sidewalks.

According to Hamilton Transit blog, “The work involves road and sidewalk reconstruction and watermain replacement. Urban Braille sidewalk and decorative concrete boulevards will be installed from Barton Street to the new GO station. Traffic calming bumpouts (curb extensions) will also be installed at the intersection of James and Strachan to narrow the crossing distance for pedestrians.”

The Hamilton Street Railway is detouring buses operating along these routes, while the street is closed:

  • 4 Bayfront;
  • 20 A-Line express;
  • 99 Waterfront shuttle.

The detour notice offers a sneak preview of at least one service change that the HSR will implement this fall: buses operating along the 20 A-Line express route currently don’t serve this part of James North. The HSR will extend the route to the waterfront, starting Tuesday, September 2.

Construction continues until October 29.
