Eglinton Crosstown LRT -- Chaplin Station:
TTC detours start June 4

eglinton crosstown logo.pngMetrolinx contractors for the Eglinton Crosstown light rail transit line are blocking various traffic lanes on Eglinton Avenue West, Chaplin Crescent and other nearby streets as they proceed to work building the future Chaplin Station.

Crews will be building headwalls for the future station and cross-passages for maintenance teams to gain access to the future tunnel. Headwalls are underground support walls at the east and west ends of each station site. After preparing the site, crews install the headwalls, before they can start to build the twin tunnels.

The headwalls create the frame for future underground stations and must be in place before tunnel-boring machines arrival at each station location. To build the headwalls, crews also need to set up a “grout plant” nearby to pump grout, a form of concrete, to the work zone.

The work zone extends along Eglinton Avenue West between just east of Spadina Road and Heddington Avenue. Crews will separate the work area from the traffic right of-way with traffic cones, concrete barriers and fencing. They’ll also use various traffic-control measures and construction zones, which will first occupy the Eglinton Avenue and Chaplin Crescent intersection and then change and shift over the coming months as workers build the headwalls.

A new traffic pattern for the headwall construction started the last week of May and continues until late fall. After this stage of traffic controls, expect temporary, short-term lane restrictions as crews install grout lines on Eglinton east and west of Chaplin Crescent.

During the next stage of construction, the jet grout plant remains in place at Gilgorm Road on the Metrolinx property north of Eglinton Avenue West, narrowing the south portion of Gilgorm to a just a single northbound lane. Latimer Avenue remains closed. The City of Toronto continues to prohibit motorists from turning left from or onto Russell Hill Road.

The work site now has expanded into the intersection of Eglinton Avenue and Chaplin Crescent on the north side of the street.

Traffic lanes on Eglinton Avenue remain as one lane in each direction between Spadina Road and Heddington Avenue.

Due to the construction within the intersection, Chaplin Crescent will be closed to northbound traffic at Eglinton West. Left turns will be prohibited.

While the work zone occupies the intersection and blocks northbound traffic on Chaplin, the TTC is detouring buses operating along the 14 Glencairn and 33 Forest Hill routes. Detours continue until fall.
