Passengers from the Beach, Leslieville, Riverdale, Corktown and other neighbourhoods in east-end Toronto are about to face longer commutes as the TTC upgrades the streetcar infrastructure on Queen Street East, starting Monday, May 12.

In another project, the TTC creates a new streetcar junction at Queen Street East and Leslie Street. In this project, it’s upgrading the tracks, curves and switches at an older junction at Queen Street East and Victoria Street, one block east of Yonge Street.

The TTC is detouring streetcars operating along the 301 Queen overnight and 501 Queen routes, while crews upgrade the junction. Shuttle buses replace the cars to drop off and pick up passengers along Queen Street East between Woodbine Loop and Jarvis Street. The TTC is also replacing streetcars operating along the 502 Downtowner route with buses during the work.

Construction continues until May 31.

After the TTC has finished these two junction projects, it will start yet another one at Queen Street East and Broadview Avenue from Monday, June 30 until Friday, July 25.

The TTC has produced a video in which the TTC’s Chief Executive Officer, Andy Byford, explains to its Executive Director of Corporate Communications, Brad Ross, why the TTC is undertaking these three projects at major streetcar junctions this spring and summer.
